Week 1 - João Ducci - Peaceful Silhouettes

 




These pictures are from a beach day I had with my best friends earlier this summer. I chose these because I love the shadows on the sand and the waves caused by the setting sun, the warm glow on the horizon and the water, and the contrast of the silhouettes from the pier and my friend's body. He was sitting by the water, meditating, and I decided to take these pictures of him (I took a bunch more). He didn't realize I was doing it, until he started to walk back to where our stuff was in the last picture. My friends and I were looking through these right after and thought they were beautiful. But we started cracking up when we saw the last one, because it looks like one of those bigfoot sighting pictures you find on the internet. Though the composition is pretty and peaceful, the shape of my friend's silhouette looks pretty funny and suspicious.

    Beautiful images and nice story. If you were to put this piece onstage with the comedy of it, this blog post would be all you would need to convey ideas. Nice post!

      I noticed the overlapping shadows on the walls of the dancers; something I often find joy in watching when they are present. It was fascinating to watch the dancers in their "free time" from the task, playing with the light and playing with the space. They were watching their figures and working to perfection, but also playing around. I always like to say that hobbies are something you enjoy doing with your life, and passions are something you need to do to enjoy life. For a lot of us in the major, that is dance. We are passionate about it, so much so, that even while staring down our every flaw or mistake we are able to find joy, love, and livelihood in this process. Week 0 - Kassia Curl - Light in Nature (Sample post)

  Hello! My name is Kassia and I am the TA for Dance 287 this quarter. My photo for this week's post is a sunset that I captured (definitely not while driving) just outside of Irvine. The colors in the sky caught my attention because they fade from dim cool tones all the way down to bright yellow and orange in the center. The evening sunlight brushes softly along the clouds, and it creates a warm and beautiful moment to me :)

  As artists, we see the world differently, but we all incorporate our surroundings into our art. To help understand lighting in a new way, these blog posts aim to increase your appreciation for light, in your daily life, and expand your vision as an artist. They will also help develop your eye for light, not just in the theatre, but in your daily life. To more effectively understand how light can alter the perception of the audience, we need to first understand how it alters our perception daily. As we move through the quarter, I hope this blog will help you discover light in ways you have not seen before. You'll see colors you've never noticed before, you may recognize the angle of a certain light, and you will find ways to articulate how light makes you feel.
